Meet Kate Bowen

Kate (Catherine) Bowen lives in Belmont, MA and has two children in elementary school. Kate serves as a Town Meeting Member in precinct 4, and serves on the Butler PTA Board. She is an active voice for the environment, sustainability, and health in the community.

In 2013, as part of her role as chair of Sustainable Belmont, she initiated the Belmont Safe Routes to School Community Working Group in partnership with then regional coordinator, Heather Drake (SRTS-Mass DOT). This forum brings together stakeholders in the community to improve walking and biking routes for school-aged children and families with the goal of increasing sustainable transit and improving the safety. The work of this group has contributed to the addition crosswalks on inter-school routes, new sidewalk infrastructure serving the schools, an infrastructure project award by MassDOT,  increased awareness of pedestrian routes and needs, greater collaboration among the SRTS groups across the different elementary schools, and the crosswalk flag program which sites pedestrian flags at difficult crossing for greater visibility.

Kate Bowen received her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art in 2001 and has taught a range of applied arts courses in the Boston area in secondary, and post-secondary education. Her previous grants include a Blanche Coleman award and a Somerville LCC grant. She currently works in higher ed administration and looks forward to this opportunity to bring a bit of art to life in Belmont while relishing in the love of walking!
